Fusion 360 Slow Performance and Freezes: Graphics Driver, Cache Clear, and Offline Mode

A user on the Autodesk Community forum reported that Fusion 360 (version 2602.1.25) under Windows 11 24H2 had "incredible bad performance" on an HP Z-Book Mobile Workstation with an i9 processor, 64GB RAM. The application took ages to start, any procedure took way too long, and it regularly froze. Another user reported that Fusion 360 became so slow after an update that they couldn't edit their model — and this happened on all 3 of their desktops. A third user with a MacBook Pro M2 Max and 48GB RAM reported that Fusion was "laggy all the time" on the fastest Mac available.

These reports span Windows and macOS, high-end and mid-range hardware, and multiple Fusion versions. The root causes are consistent: graphics driver conflicts, corrupted local cache, and cloud sync overhead.

Fix 1: Clear the Local Cache

Fusion 360 stores a local cache of your cloud designs. Over time, this cache can become corrupted or bloated, causing performance degradation.

Windows Cache Clear

  1. Close Fusion 360 completely
  2. Enable hidden files: File Explorer → View → Hidden Items
  3. Navigate to: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\webdeploy\Production\
  4. Find the cache directories (typically named with alphanumeric strings)
  5. Look for the F and Q directories — these contain cached design files
  6. Move the contents of these directories to a backup folder (don't delete yet — you may need them for offline access)
  7. Restart Fusion 360
  8. Fusion will re-download designs from the cloud as you open them

macOS Cache Clear

  1. Close Fusion 360
  2. Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder
  3. Navigate to: ~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Autodesk Fusion 360/
  4. Find the alphanumeric directories containing cached files
  5. Move the contents to a backup folder
  6. Restart Fusion 360

When to Clear Cache

Clear the cache when:

  • Fusion takes more than 30 seconds to start
  • Opening designs takes significantly longer than usual
  • Fusion freezes during save operations
  • You see "Working Offline" errors despite having internet
  • After a Fusion version update

Fix 2: Update or Roll Back Graphics Drivers

The user with the RTX 5060 reported that Fusion became slow after an update, with GPU driver version 576.88. Graphics driver conflicts are the most common cause of Fusion performance regression after updates.

NVIDIA Driver Update

  1. Download the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver (not Game Ready)
  2. Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode to remove the current driver
  3. Install the fresh Studio Driver
  4. Restart and test Fusion

NVIDIA Driver Rollback

If the latest driver causes problems:

  1. Open Device Manager → Display Adapters → NVIDIA GPU → Properties → Driver
  2. Click Roll Back Driver (if available)
  3. If Roll Back is unavailable, download an older driver version from NVIDIA's driver archive
  4. Install the older driver using DDU for clean removal first

Mac Graphics

On Apple Silicon Macs, graphics drivers are part of macOS:

  1. Update to the latest macOS version
  2. If performance is still poor, try the Software Rendering option in Fusion:
    • Go to Preferences → General → Graphics
    • Try switching between DirectX (Windows) or Metal (Mac) and OpenGL
    • Test which mode performs best on your hardware

Fix 3: Switch Graphics Mode in Fusion

Fusion 360 supports multiple graphics APIs. Switching can resolve performance issues:

  1. Go to Preferences → General → Graphics
  2. Try each option:
    • DirectX 11 (Windows default)
    • OpenGL (cross-platform fallback)
    • Metal (Mac default for Apple Silicon)
  3. Restart Fusion after each change
  4. Test performance with a moderately complex design

The user on the MacBook Pro M2 Max was told: "Fusion has never been the fastest on Mac. The Metal renderer is still being optimized." If Metal is slow, try OpenGL as a fallback.

Fix 4: Disable Cloud Sync Temporarily (Offline Mode)

Fusion 360's cloud sync runs in the background, uploading changes and downloading updates. On slow networks or with large designs, this can consume CPU and bandwidth, causing freezes.

  1. Click the clock icon in the top-right corner (Online Status)
  2. Select Working Offline
  3. Fusion stops syncing with the cloud
  4. Work on your designs locally — changes are saved to the local cache
  5. When done, switch back to Online to sync changes

When to Use Offline Mode

  • When working on a large design and experiencing freezes during editing
  • When your internet connection is slow or unstable
  • When you need maximum performance for a complex operation
  • When traveling with limited connectivity

Risk of Offline Mode

If Fusion crashes while in offline mode, unsynced changes may be lost. To mitigate:

  1. Work in offline mode for short periods (1-2 hours)
  2. Switch back to online mode periodically to sync
  3. Before switching to offline, ensure all previous changes are synced

Fix 5: Reduce Design Complexity

Fusion 360's performance is directly related to the complexity of your design. The Autodesk support article on large assembly performance recommends:

Use Simplified Components

  1. For imported components (STEP, IGES), use the Simplify tool to remove internal features
  2. Replace high-poly imported models with simple proxy geometry for assembly context
  3. Use the Replace Component feature to swap detailed models with simplified versions

Suppress Features

  1. In the timeline, right-click features not needed for current work → Suppress
  2. Suppressed features are not calculated, reducing regeneration time
  3. Unsuppress them when you need to edit or export

Use Configurations Instead of Multiple Designs

  1. Instead of creating separate designs for product variants, use Configurations
  2. Configurations share the same timeline but suppress different features per configuration
  3. This reduces the number of designs Fusion needs to sync

Fix 6: Fusion Service Utility Reset

If none of the above fixes work, use the Fusion Service Utility to reset Fusion to a clean state:

  1. Close Fusion 360
  2. Launch the Fusion 360 Service Utility:
    • Windows: Find it in the Start Menu or at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\webdeploy\Production\<version>\FusionServiceUtility.exe
    • Mac: /Applications/Autodesk/Fusion 360.app/Contents/Library/FusionServiceUtility
  3. Click Reset — this clears preferences and cache but keeps your designs
  4. Restart Fusion
  5. If the issue persists, run the Service Utility again and click Repair
  6. Repair reinstalls Fusion components without removing your designs

Fix 7: Check for Fusion Update Issues

The user who reported slowness "after last update" across 3 desktops was experiencing a version-specific performance regression. Autodesk releases Fusion updates approximately every 4-6 weeks.

Check Current Version

  1. Click the ? icon in the top-right → About
  2. Note the version number (e.g., 2.0.20915)

Report Version-Specific Issues

  1. If performance degradation started immediately after an update, it's likely a version-specific issue
  2. Post on the Autodesk Community Fusion forum with:
    • Your version number
    • Hardware specs
    • Description of the performance change
    • Whether it happens on all designs or specific ones
  3. Autodesk staff monitor the forum and can escalate to the development team

Wait for the Next Update

Autodesk typically releases a fix in the next update cycle (4-6 weeks). If you can't wait:

  1. Use the Fusion Service Utility to install the Previous Production Version
  2. This reverts Fusion to the last known stable version
  3. Your designs remain accessible from the cloud

Fix 8: Network and Antivirus Configuration

Fusion 360 requires constant internet access for cloud sync. Network issues can cause freezes when Fusion tries to connect:

  1. Add Fusion 360 to your antivirus exclusions:
    • Fusion360.exe
    • AdskIdentityManager.exe
    • The entire webdeploy directory
  2. Configure your firewall to allow Fusion 360 through ports 80, 443, and 50530
  3. If using a VPN, try disconnecting — VPNs can add latency to Fusion's cloud sync
  4. If using a proxy, configure Fusion's proxy settings in Preferences → General → Network

Summary

| Fix | Impact | Difficulty | |-----|--------|------------| | Clear local cache | High — fixes corruption-related slowdown | Easy | | Update/rollback graphics driver | Very high — fixes driver conflicts | Medium | | Switch graphics mode | Medium — API-specific performance | Easy | | Work in offline mode | High — eliminates sync overhead | Easy | | Reduce design complexity | High — less processing per operation | Medium | | Fusion Service Utility reset | High — clean reinstall | Easy | | Check for update issues | Diagnostic — identifies version bugs | Easy | | Network/antivirus config | Medium — fixes connectivity freezes | Medium |

Start with clearing the local cache — it's the most common fix and takes 5 minutes. If that doesn't help, check your graphics driver. If the problem started after a Fusion update, use the Service Utility to revert to the previous version while waiting for a fix from Autodesk.
