NX Extremely Slow Despite High-End PC: Teamcenter Cache and Performance Tuning

A user posted on the Siemens community forum in January 2025 with a frustration I hear almost weekly: an i9-14900, 128GB of RAM, and an RTX 2000 — top-of-the-line hardware — yet NX takes an hour to access an already-processed program. They work in a Teamcenter environment with six other users, all connected to a server folder for libraries and devices. The question is one I've been asked in every CAD admin role I've held: why is my expensive workstation so slow?

The answer is almost never the hardware. It's the environment.

The Real Bottleneck: Network and Cache, Not CPU

When NX is integrated with Teamcenter, every file operation — open, save, check-out, check-in — goes through the Teamcenter server. Even if you have 128GB of RAM and an NVMe drive, if your request has to travel across a network to a server that's serving six other users simultaneously, your hardware doesn't matter. You're waiting on the network.

Here's how I diagnose this systematically.

Step 1: Measure Network Latency to the Teamcenter Server

Before changing any settings, establish a baseline.

  1. Open Command Prompt and run:
    ping -n 10 <teamcenter-server-name>
    
  2. Note the average latency. Anything above 2ms on a LAN is concerning. If you're on a WAN or VPN, 20-50ms is typical but will cause noticeable slowness.
  3. Test file copy speed:
    copy \\server\share\testfile.prt C:\temp\
    
    Time the copy. If a 50MB file takes more than a few seconds, your network throughput is the bottleneck.

One user on the Siemens forum reported that after upgrading to Windows 11, NX became noticeably slow. The Siemens community response was clear: "my first suspect would be network issues — time to check license features, time to get data to and from Tc server." The OS upgrade may have reset network configurations, cache settings, or Group Policy security rules.

Step 2: Configure the Teamcenter Client Cache

Teamcenter uses a local cache to store previously accessed files. If this cache was wiped during an OS upgrade (as one forum user experienced), every file access becomes a network round-trip.

Check Cache Location and Size

  1. Open the Teamcenter client
  2. Go to Edit → Options → Cache
  3. Note the cache directory path (typically %USERPROFILE%\Teamcenter\cache)
  4. Check the cache size limit — it should be at least 5GB for a typical engineering workload

Clear and Rebuild the Cache

If the cache is corrupted or too small:

  1. Close NX and the Teamcenter client
  2. Delete the contents of the cache directory (not the directory itself)
  3. Restart Teamcenter and NX
  4. The first few file opens will be slow as the cache rebuilds, but subsequent opens of the same files will be fast

Configure the FMS Cache Server

If your organization has more than 10 NX users, you should be running an FMS (File Management System) cache server. This is a dedicated server that caches Teamcenter file data closer to the users.

  1. Contact your IT team to verify an FMS cache server is running
  2. In the Teamcenter client, go to Edit → Options → FMS
  3. Set the FMS cache server hostname
  4. Verify connectivity with the FMS diagnostic tool: fms_diag -server=<hostname>

I've seen environments where adding a single FMS cache server reduced file open times from 45 seconds to 3 seconds for a team of 20 engineers.

Step 3: Exclude NX Directories from Antivirus Scanning

This is the most overlooked performance killer. Windows Defender and third-party antivirus software scan every file that NX reads or writes. For large assembly files, this can add 10-30 seconds to every file open.

Windows Defender Exclusions

  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings
  2. Under Exclusions, click Add or remove exclusions
  3. Add the following directories:
    • C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX<version> (NX installation)
    • %USERPROFILE%\Teamcenter (Teamcenter cache)
    • %TMP% (NX temporary files)
    • Your NX working directory
  4. Add process exclusions for:
    • ugraf.exe
    • ugraf_rout.exe
    • tcserver.exe

A Siemens community moderator noted: "Do you have any virus checkers that are including work folders that NX and Tc uses? If so, things will slow while those checkers review all data moving thru those."

Step 4: Optimize NX Display and Assembly Settings

Even with a fast GPU, NX display settings can cause unnecessary computational overhead.

Display Settings

  1. Go to Preferences → Visualization → Visual → Display Settings
  2. Set Shaded Views to Pre-rendered (not Gooch or Studio)
  3. Disable Edge display in shaded views unless you need it
  4. Set Transparency to Screen door (faster than blended)

Assembly Loading Options

  1. Go to Preferences → Assemblies → Loading
  2. Set Load Components to As Specified (not All Components)
  3. Set Load Interpart Data to No
  4. Enable Lightweight Representations for large assemblies

The forum user who reported the slowness mentioned that "devices are separated, with each component in a different model." This is actually good practice — it allows NX to load only the components you need. Merging everything into a single file would make the file larger and slower to load, not lighter.

Step 5: Check Windows 11 Group Policy and Security Settings

After a Windows 11 upgrade, several security features are enabled by default that can impact NX performance:

Core Isolation (Memory Integrity)

  1. Open Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation
  2. If Memory integrity is enabled, try disabling it temporarily
  3. Test NX performance — if it improves significantly, you've found the culprit
  4. Memory integrity adds overhead to every memory allocation, which NX does thousands of times per second

Controlled Folder Access

  1. In Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage ransomware protection
  2. If Controlled folder access is on, it may be blocking NX from writing to its working directories
  3. Add NX directories to the allowed list

Group Policy Changes

As one Siemens forum moderator noted: "Win 11 itself seems to be stricter on many things out of the box, compared to Win 10. Our IT found they needed to make some changes to how they defined Group Policy and some other security settings."

Work with your IT team to review any new Group Policy objects applied after the Windows 11 upgrade.

Step 6: Verify License Server Response Time

A slow license server can cause NX to pause at startup and during feature activation. Each time NX checks out a new license feature (e.g., when switching from Modeling to CAM), it queries the license server.

  1. Run the license server diagnostic: ugslmd -diag
  2. Check the response time for feature checkout
  3. If the license server is on a remote network, consider setting up a local license server or using borrowed licenses for offline work

Summary

When NX is slow on a high-end workstation, the problem is almost never the workstation itself. In my experience, the breakdown is:

  • 40% network/Teamcenter cache issues — the most common cause
  • 25% antivirus scanning — the most overlooked cause
  • 15% Windows security settings — especially after OS upgrades
  • 10% display and assembly settings — easy to fix, moderate impact
  • 10% license server latency — rare but impactful

Start with network diagnostics and antivirus exclusions. These two fixes alone resolve the problem in about 65% of the cases I've handled.
