Bambu Studio Flow Dynamics and Pressure Advance Calibration: Getting Perfect Prints Every Time
Bambu Studio includes built-in calibration tools for flow dynamics, pressure advance, and flow rate — but most users never run them. I cover the complete calibration workflow from first layer to pressure advance, with recommended values for common filaments and troubleshooting for corner bulging, seam gaps, and inconsistent extrusion.

Bambu Studio Flow Dynamics and Pressure Advance Calibration: Getting Perfect Prints Every Time
I've calibrated dozens of filaments across Bambu X1C, P1S, and A1 printers, and Bambu Studio's built-in calibration tools are excellent — when you know which ones to run and in what order. The calibration workflow matters: calibrate flow rate before pressure advance, and always calibrate with input shaping enabled (which is the default on Bambu Lab printers).
The Calibration Order
Bambu Studio includes several calibration tools, accessible via the Calibration menu. Here's the order I follow for every new filament:
- Bed leveling / bed tramming — ensure the first layer is consistent
- Flow Dynamics Calibration — measures how the filament flows at different speeds
- Flow Rate Calibration — fine-tunes extrusion multiplier
- Pressure Advance Calibration — eliminates corner bulging and seam gaps
As one calibration guide notes: "Run through these once when you first set up a new filament, and your prints will be consistently excellent."
Step 1: Bed Leveling and First Layer
Before any filament calibration, ensure your bed is properly leveled. Bambu Lab printers automate this, but I always verify:
- Run the bed leveling sequence from the printer's LCD
- Print a first layer test pattern (a single-layer square covering most of the bed)
- Inspect for consistent adhesion — no gaps, no ridges, uniform thickness
- Adjust Z-offset if needed via the printer's menu
Step 2: Flow Dynamics Calibration
This is Bambu's proprietary calibration that measures how the filament flows through the extruder at different speeds and accelerations. It's the foundation for all other calibrations.
Running Flow Dynamics Calibration
- In Bambu Studio, go to Device → Calibration
- Select Flow Dynamics Calibration
- The printer will print a series of test lines at different flow rates
- Bambu Studio will automatically analyze the results (on X1C with LIDAR) or prompt you to select the best result manually (on P1S/A1)
The X1C's LIDAR system can automatically evaluate the calibration pattern. As one detailed guide explains: "The printer will print a special pattern designed to measure pressure advance. This process usually takes around 5-10 minutes. Bambu Studio will automatically apply the calibrated values."
What Flow Dynamics Calibration Does
This calibration measures the relationship between extrusion speed, pressure buildup, and flow rate for your specific filament. The results are stored in the filament profile and applied automatically to future prints with that filament.
Step 3: Flow Rate Calibration
Flow rate calibration determines the correct extrusion multiplier for your filament. Too high and you get over-extrusion (rough surfaces, dimensional inaccuracy); too low and you get under-extrusion (gaps, weak layers).
Running Flow Rate Calibration
- Go to Device → Calibration → Flow Rate Calibration
- The printer prints a hollow cube with walls at different flow rates
- Examine the walls — the one with the smoothest surface and most consistent width is the correct flow rate
- Enter the value in Bambu Studio's filament settings
Typical Flow Rate Values
- Bambu PLA: 0.98-1.02 (usually 1.00 with auto-calibration)
- Third-party PLA: 0.95-1.05 (varies significantly by brand)
- PETG: 0.95-0.98 (PETG typically needs slightly lower flow)
- ABS/ASA: 0.98-1.02
A Bambu Lab forum user who calibrated multiple filaments notes: "I calibrated these filaments on the cool plate and the high temp plate, depending on the filament type. The purpose was just to see the variation across colors and brands."
Step 4: Pressure Advance Calibration
Pressure advance (PA) compensates for the pressure lag in the extrusion system. Without PA, corners bulge (too much pressure at direction changes) and seams have gaps (too little pressure at the start of a new line).
Running Pressure Advance Calibration
- Go to Device → Calibration → Pressure Advance
- The printer prints a pattern with lines at different PA values
- Look for the line with the most consistent width — no bulging at the start, no thinning at the end
- Enter the value in Bambu Studio's filament settings
The Interaction Between PA and Input Shaping
This is a critical point that many users miss. As ADP Industries explains: "The effective acceleration profile that PA 'sees' is already shaped by the input shaper. The practical implication: calibrate PA with input shaping enabled (which is the default on Bambu Lab printers). Don't disable input shaping before calibrating PA."
If you disable input shaping, calibrate PA, then re-enable input shaping, your PA value will be wrong because the acceleration profile has changed.
Typical Pressure Advance Values
Based on community calibration data and my own testing:
- Bambu PLA (0.4mm nozzle): 0.018-0.025
- Third-party PLA: 0.015-0.030
- Bambu PETG: 0.020-0.030
- ABS/ASA: 0.015-0.025
- TPU: 0.030-0.050
Manual Calibration (For Non-Bambu Printers)
If you're using Bambu Studio with a non-Bambu printer (like a Voron), the automatic calibration tools won't be available. In this case:
- Use OrcaSlicer's calibration tools — OrcaSlicer (a Bambu Studio fork) includes manual calibration patterns for flow rate, pressure advance, and temperature towers
- Print calibration patterns manually — download PA and flow rate test models from Printables or MakerWorld
- Enter values manually in Bambu Studio's filament settings
Troubleshooting Common Calibration Issues
Corner Bulging After Calibration
If corners still bulge after PA calibration:
- PA value too low — increase by 0.005 increments
- Acceleration too high — reduce acceleration in printer settings
- Outer wall speed too high — reduce to 100-150 mm/s
- Extruder gear slipping — check extruder tension and gear condition
Seam Gaps (Notch at Z-seam)
If you see a visible notch or gap at the Z-seam:
- PA value too high — decrease by 0.005 increments
- Wipe before retract — enable in Bambu Studio's extruder settings
- Seam position — try "Aligned" or "Rear" instead of "Random"
Inconsistent Extrusion After Flow Calibration
If extrusion is still inconsistent after flow rate calibration:
- Filament diameter variation — measure filament diameter at several points with calipers. If it varies more than ±0.03 mm, the filament is low quality.
- Moisture in filament — dry the filament and re-calibrate
- Extruder temperature too low — increase by 5°C increments
- Max volumetric speed too low — increase in filament settings if the printer is slowing down during fast sections
Calibration Results Don't Stick
If calibrated values aren't being applied to future prints:
- Save the filament profile after calibration (File → Save filament profile)
- Ensure you're selecting the calibrated filament profile when starting a new print
- Check that the filament profile isn't being overridden by a project file's embedded settings
Summary
Bambu Studio's calibration tools are powerful but underused. The correct order is bed leveling → flow dynamics → flow rate → pressure advance. Always calibrate with input shaping enabled (the default), and save calibrated values to your filament profiles. For third-party filaments, expect to spend 30-45 minutes on full calibration — the quality improvement is immediately visible in cleaner corners, smoother surfaces, and more consistent extrusion. For Bambu filament, the built-in profiles are already well-calibrated, but running the calibration tools once per spool can still improve results due to manufacturing variations between batches.
